My job is not to be easy on people. My job is to make them better. Steve Jobs, CNNMoney/Fortune, 2008
I read a blog post recently that said to use social media to establish yourself as an authority. This guy has two blogs (and writes for at least one other) where he is considered an authority. I am constantly thinking about running a blog, what a delight it would be to write all day long.
If I follow his philosophy, I need to be an authority in order to gain an audience by using social media. He writes about music and beer and being a dad and he has an audience. My older brother was visiting me in Columbus and asked me if there were any spots like Bogarts in Cincinnati where he could catch a concert. I had, and still have, no idea. I told him I knew a guy that ran a music blog in Cincinnati and wondered out loud if Columbus had anything similar. He asked who the person was that I knew and when I told him he expressed immediate curiosity. You know him?
I had to be honest and tell my brother that I know him but I don’t know him. I mean, I’ve met him several times but I doubt he remembers me. I know his wife. The fact that my brother was intrigued by the potential of me knowing this blogger was mind boggling. He proceeded to show me how he has ENS bookmarked on his phone.
So I need to be an authority. I need to do something so well that people will read about it. I spent most of my adult life working in athletics but there are coaches, former athletes, and (a few) members of the media that are far better references than me. I don’t do fantasy sports and once I left athletics, I’ve left it. I’m not an authority on sports.
I like to cook but I don’t do it often enough to write about it. I run for exercise but I’m not an authority on it, even if I wrote about how to run slow. I started a business and am considered pretty funny by most people but my talent playing Candy Crush Saga is more impressive than what I have done with either of those skills.
Here’s what I can do. I can make you better. Read about me and you will feel better about yourself. I mean, read my blog and you will feel better about yourself. I can help you be better.
